I was sad when I learned yesterday that Eric Carle had passed away. My three children were enthralled by his vibrant artwork and comforting stories. Nearly twenty years ago, while working for National Geographic Today, I interviewed Carle about his life and work. We filmed his collage making process for our production which took place around the time The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art opened to the public. He was a joy to work with — pleasant and collaborative. When we put the piece together I was thrilled to include my wife starting a passage from “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and essentially pass it along to the author, Eric.
